basement renovation progress

the end is in sight...
the new back door (it just needs paint)
the previous door was alot smaller than a standard door size and so was the opening in the concrete wall. so we had to jack-hammer the concrete wall at the sill to get the new door to fit!

we installed the engineered oak floor and cabinet doors:

we put an electrical outlet inside the tall pantry cabinet so that we can put a microwave in there to save space on the counter.

we got an island from Ikea:
Scott sanded the butcher block top

a little before and "after"

bathroom floor + more...

we installed the electric radiant heat mat over 1/2" cement board over the concrete slab. we attached the cement board to the slab with thin-set mortar (the same stuff we use to install the tiles)-

normally, we would just install the tile directly to the slab, but we needed to raise the floor height to match the height of the neighboring room (where we installed the DriCore subfloor).
it also made the mat installation easier, because we could staple to the cement board.
tiling went smoothly; ceramic tile is so easy to score and snap- we didnt have to use the wet saw (which is messy and requires some serious clean-up time)

so now we wait 24 hours and then add the grout!

the ceiling tiles are awaiting installation, but we will first need to modify the existing ductwork in the ceiling so that we can get A/C into this new space.

mudding is complete!

Drywall

this time around, we tried to avoid butt seams between the sheet of drywall-so all of the sheets are laid vertically with the tapered seams between them: this will make the mudding process much easier.

we bought a couple of new tools:
1) a drywall screw drill- it is alot like a nail gun insofar as you load the screws into the drill. it is a definite time saver and a must have! it also makes the perfect dimple!

2) a drywall cutting drill- it makes it easier to make perfect cutouts, and again- is a great time saver!

progress

we are finished re-wiring the basement...now we can install the drywall!

when we pulled up the old carpet (that was glued to the slab) the rubber backing stayed behind...so we needed to scrape it from the concrete:

we found this great product called Dri-Core, which are tongue and grooved sealed particle board panels with plastic raised bases. This flooring is great for a damp basement slab:

so we installed the sub-floor panels too:

then just this morning we had a minor catastrophe when the hot water tank started to leak (maybe has something to do with that big dent in its side?)
the water leaked under the wall and into the neighboring room, but never fear, the Dri-Core is there!

This is the wall of the "kitchenette"
we took some preliminary measurements and laid out the dimensions of the kitchenette on some scrap wood:
